  • Pick up a map quiz from me, and follow the directions to work through a series of map quizzes at: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com
  • Be sure to record your scores at the bottom of each section on the handout, and to show the teacher your on-screen score before going on the next quiz
  • Scoring- Add scores for all 5 quizzes:
    • 152 +  is 8/8
    • 144-151 is 7/8
    • 135-143 is 6/8
    • 127-134 is 5/8
    • 118-126 is 4/8
    • 110-117 is 3/8
    • 101-109 is 2/8
    • 93-100 is 1/8

  • Turn in signed directives, kleenex, and crayons/colored pencils.
  • Take out your questions for episode 3 of Guns, Germs, and Steel from the table at the front of the room.
  • Take out your Do Now sheet and answer the following question: “How would you balance the use of natural resources (logging, burning fossil fuels, etc.) with protection of the environment?” (3 minutes)
  • Prepare to take notes and prepare to discuss the questions based on clips shown from Guns, Germs, and Steel.
  • After the conclusion of Guns, Germs, and Steel, we will learn about and participate in a Socratic Dialogue.

  • Take out your study guide for episode 2 of Guns, Germs, and Steel. On the back write down these questions for episode 3:
    • Why were European settlers in South Africa initially so successful?
    • What difficulties did European settlers encounter as they moved northward into Africa? Why?
    • How did Africans build successful civilizations in areas that seemed tailor-made for disease?  What happened to these civilizations?
  • Pick up a Do Now sheet and answer the following question: “Why would people choose to live in places that are hazardous?” (3 minutes)
  • Take out the question sheet for Guns, Germs, and Steel and prepare to take notes and prepare to discuss the questions based on clips shown from Guns, Germs, and Steel.
