We took the first vocab quiz!

We discussed indentured servitude!

Over the weekend, take some time to reply to one or more of the following questions/ comments relating to the 1491 excerpts:

  • What is Mann’s primary argument?
  • What evidence does he present to support that argument?
  • Do you find the evidence/ reasoning behind the argument compelling? (Are you swayed by it?)
  • What other evidence (if any) would you want to see before accepting Mann’s argument?
  • Is the continued investigation of Pre-Columbian cultures important?  Why/ why not?

  • Take out your Do Now sheet and answer the following question: “How would you balance the use of natural resources (logging, burning fossil fuels, etc.) with protection of the environment? ?” (3 minutes)
  • Take out your Geography Standards sheet and prepare to take notes to complete it. (15 minutes)
  • Pick up the question half sheet from the tray on the front table and prepare to take notes and prepare to discuss the questions based on clips shown from Guns, Germs, and Steel. (clips- 56:00, discussion to end of period and continuing tomorrow if necessary.)

•Take out your Do Now sheet and answer the following question: “Why would people choose to live in places that are hazardous?” (3 minutes)
•Take out your Geography Standards sheet and prepare to take notes to complete it. (35 minutes)
•Pick up the Geography vocabulary sheet from the tray on the front table and use your book and the internet to start defining the terms, creating visuals to represent the items, facts about the terms, and your thoughts about why each is important. (remainder of period).

I distributed the Unit 1 vocab list (available also at schoolcenter.com).  We discussed the skill of identifying arguments and distinguishing their conclusions and premises.  I then distributed selections from Charles Mann’s 1491 along with student directions.
