We discussed John Smith and the limitations of primary sources, and some of the issues and problems of Jamestown following its settlement in 1607.

Was John Smith telling the truth when he described his rescue by Pocahontas?  Why do you believe/ not believe his account?  What is “the truth”  anyway? Please comment.

Students turned in the Ancient Civ vocab packet with the first 11 terms completed.  I checked those and returned them before the end of the period.  The entire packet, including the remaining 8 terms will be due on block day this week.

Students then began to work on the Ancient Civ maps in the Ancient Civilization packet.  The maps are to be completed using the included instructions by tomorrow.

Students completed their standards mind maps (see 8/20/07 for details.)  I distributed the text and vocabulary worksheet for the Ancient Civilizations unit.  We worked through the first few vocab terms together, and then gave students time to work on the next few individually.  The first six terms will be due at the beginning of class Friday (8/24).

Students were introduced to a variety of critical thinking skills such as distinguishing between a discussion, a disagreement, an argument, and a fight; distinguishing between facts, inferences, and opinions.  We will review various critical thinking skills throughout the semester.

Students worked on a project involving the state social studies standards that will be taught in World History this year.  The standards were organized into units, and the specific examples listed with each standard were defined.  All of this information was organized into a mindmap.
